Kaldi, a sheep herder, noticed that the sheep one day were acting energetic and excited. There were said to be “dancing on their hind legs” (The Origin of Coffee). He found that the sole purpose of the hyper sheep were several shrubs with red berries on them. He claimed that they were sent with the monks or they were “heaven sent.” The monks seemed to be upset about this and decided to burn the bushes, but the smell of the roasting berries convinced them to give it a second chance. They crushed the beans (or berries) to put the embers out and proceeded to put them in water to preserve them. The monks came to try the beans, which they discovered it helped them stay awake during prayers or holy devotions. This myth did not appear in writing until 1671 A.D, so it is not known if this is a fact or not.
